Hindle is listed as a hotel proprietor. His son, William Jr., is listed as a bartender. And, his son-in-law Samuel Sleigh is listed as a clerk. An alphabetical index in the front of the ledger includes guest names. Hand-written entries record guest boarding dates and payments, along with alcohol purchases, laundry fees, and meals.

Slatington is a borough in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. It is located 15 miles northwest of Allentown, in the Lehigh Valley region of the state. Historically, structural iron, knit goods, and silk were manufactured in Slatington, and there were abundant slate quarries in the area.
