19th Century School Workbooks of Samuel Ruby Lancaster County Pennsylvania

Two of the school workbooks of Samuel Ruby are dated January through April 1807, December 1807 through March 1808, January through March 1809 and November 1809 through January 1810. They are his "ciphren books" for his arithmetic work. Included in the books are examples of single and double rule of three, proportions, simple interest, factors allowance, brokeage, simple interest of days, compound interest, rebate and discount, equation of payments, barter, loss and gain, single and compound fellowship, exchange, bank money, sale of gold, comparison of weights and measures, compound proportion, allegation medial and alternate, single and double position, arithmetical and geometrical progression, permutation, reduction, addition, subtraction and division of vulgar fractions, rule of three direct, questions for exercise at leisure hours, sounds of the levers, motion of bodis with their velocities, the rule of three inverse, contractions in the rule of three, the rule of five, single and double rule of three direct and inverse in vulgar fractions, addition and subtraction of decimals, multiplication and division of decimals, reduction of decimals, square root, cube root, biquadrate root, sursolid root, annuities or pensions, leases, rebate or discount, purchasing real or freehold estates, and more. These workbooks are a great example of the schooling of that period. The penmanship and arithmetic exercises are phenomenal.

Another school workbook, dated January 1811 through March 1811, contains surveying geometrical definitions, geometrical theorems, geometrical problems, logarithms, rectangular trigonometry, oblique angular trigonometry, and oblique plain trigonometry. Again, the penmanship is great along with numerous drawings.

Also included in the grouping are three copy books with great penmanship, dated 1803, 1804, and 1807. Also included in several copy books are land agreements probably copied for the penmanship from originals. There is a noticeable difference in the penmanship from 1803 to 1807.

Samuel (Gordon) Ruby was born on September 3, 1790, and died November 2, 1836. He was a civil engineer, and was reared and educated in Pennsylvania. His family lived in Mount Joy Township, Lancaster County. He married, Elizabeth Rupp, also of Pennsylvania of German lineage. Elizabeth was a daughter of Martin Rupp (his father was Daniel Rupp) and Anna Snavely. Elizabeth was born April 21, 1799, and died October 7, 1876. They had four sons and three daughters: Infant Ruby, Michael Gordon Ruby, Elizabeth Ruby, Professor Samuel Vernon Ruby, John M. Ruby, and Anna C. Ruby. Samuel's father was Michael Ruby, born May 16, 1765 and died February 7, 1843. His mother's name was Elizabeth (Albright), born June 22, 1768, and died September 23, 1839.
