Three account books of W. & A. Hess, hatters in Boalsburg, Centre County, Pennsylvania. The first account book is marked "commenced 1842," the second account book is dated August 1st, 1847, and the third account book is dated August 5th, 1847.

William and Adam Hess were the sons of John Hess and Juliana Elizabeth Kerstetter. John Hess, from tax records of 1836, was also a hatter of Harris Township, Boalsburg, Pennsylvania. John is a descendant of Matthias Hess, born 1735 in Germany, and Eva Catherine Stober, born 1743 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

W. & A. Hess were well-known hatters in Centre County. Some of their customers included George Boal, John Boal, Samuel Dunlap, John Duffy, David Dale, Christian Dale, Emanuel Ettinger, Jacob Gingrich, Andrew Gregg, William Houtz, Jacob Houser, Daniel Houser, Christian Houser, Joseph Keller, David Keller, Jacob Kepler, George Keller, William Miles, James Potter, Thomas Patten, John Ross, Robert Whitehill, John Zettle, and many, many more.
