19th Century Day  Book / Ledger of George S. Hartley Lancaster County Pennsylvania

A great ledger or day book of George Hartley of Manor Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Mr. Hartley was a tailor and made coats, vests, pants, etc. His day book lists name such as Abraham Cauffman (Kauffman), Christian Herr, Jacob Hess, Jacob Wissler, George Wissler, Abraham Hershey, Benjamin Hershey, Christian Hershey, John Hershey, David Hershey, Jacob Hershey, Henry Hershey, John Shank, Benjamin Wittmer (Witmer), Henry Snider (Snyder/Schneider), Henry Brenneman, Christian Hertzler, John Witmer, and Abraham Buckwalter--all who are in some way descendants of Milton S. Hershey. Other names include Jacob Stoner, Henry Wise, John Mann, John Carn, Benjamin Musselman, Abraham Kline, Peter Kline, John Dombauch, William Cramer, Emanuel Fry, Henry Harnish, Michael Eshbauch, Peter Manning, Daniel Bitner, Jacob Eshlaman (Eschelman), David Eshlaman, Casper Ullmer, and more. The first entry is dated 1839 and the last entry is dated 1851.

A page in the day book notes that George S. Hartley was born August 30, 1816. His wife Elizabeth was born January 2, 1817 and died May 10, 1840. He was remarried to a Mary. Three women’s names are listed (assumed to be daughters): Susan Ann Hartley, Sarah Ann Hartley, and Mary Ann Hartley. An 1850 census for Manor Township, Lancaster County, lists a George Hartley, age 33; Mary Hartley, age 33; Susanna Hartley, age 7; and Sarah Ann Hartley, Age 4. A page in the back of the day book lists the birth of two sons--both whom died at a young age.
