19TH AND 20TH CENTURY CENTRE COUNTY PENNSYLVANIA LEDGER
19th and 20th Century Centre County Pennsylvania Ledger

An interesting ledger dating from as early as 1829, with entries in German, to 1909. It is possible that several different individuals recorded entries in this ledger. It is believed that the ledger belonged to one Daniel Bresler of Penn Township, Centre County, Pennsylvania, who was a laborer and recorded his various jobs and earnings. Examples of several entries:

For John Karn (1876 - 1879):
One day making rails, one day making saw logs, half day making fence, half day halling (sic) stones, half day thrashing buckwheat, etc.

For John Smith (1877 - 1892):
Settled with John Smith from all acct's up to this date due me, paid. To one day working on new ground, one day making rails, four bushels of apples, one day make fence, one day plowing and harrowing, etc.

For Alfred Keen (1884 - 1885):
By half day sowing oats, one day making hay, two days a horse for plowing, half day loading manure, four days use of horse, etc.

For Elizabeth Shartzer (1883):
To balance due from settlement, two days house cleaning, boiling applebutter, grafting three trees, cutting wood in wood shed, sausage and meat, etc.

There are entries for John Frank, Daniel Ulrich, Henry Weiser, Frank Weaver, Frank Knarr, William Smith, Emanuel Confer, J. W. Stover (farming), Elias Krumrine, Jerry Snook, George A. Skyler, Peter Breon, Homer Treaster, Jacob Ramond, and many more.

There are entries in 1891 and 1897 for the number of plumb (sic) [plums] sold to customers. There are entries for 1897 for crops raised on Musser property [no. of bushels] for potatoes, apples, buckwheat, hay, etc.

There are entries for 1897 "memorandum of C. H. Pressler costs" to "come home to farm for mother." Bought of Henry Feidler one bay mare, one brood sow, two halters, paid for writing the deed, paid their taxes, bought one dinner bell, etc. In 1897 entries for "amount of farm produce sold."

In 1895 entries for a Dr. S. Musser, Physician Service, for one trip at night, one trip in day time, one trip at 6 o'clock p.m., etc. In 1904 entries for a Dr. H. S. Bracht, Physician, for attendance on mother, trip at 11 o'clock night, Sunday afternoon, Tuesday afternoon, trip Thursday afternoon, etc.

An interesting piece of history.
