Antique Sperm Whale Schrimshaw Tooth Ship and Buildings

An early American scrimshaw sperm whale's tooth engraved with a three-masted ship under sail on one side (American flag at the stern). View of a town on the other side. Signed E. A. M. (believed to be Meserole). Good condition with a long age crack on one side and a minor age crack on the other side. Possesses a rich patina. Measures 6 1/4 inches long. Circa 1830.

Provenance: from the Meserole family that confirms this piece as being a part of their heritage. Meseroles were one of the early settlers of Greenpoint, Brooklyn, New York. The town view could be a New York scene.
