19TH CENTURY AMERICAN STENCIL PATTERNS
A great lot of early American stencil patterns, some of which are Hitchcock type chair patterns. Many of the stencils are made from pages of a ledger or old brown paper. I do not have any documentation for the origin of this lot, but I do know that they were among pages of a ledger that originated in Danville, PA, and traveled to Turbot Township, Northumberland County, PA; Logansville, Clinton County, PA, and then Centre County, PA. The name John Berry is written on one of the stencils. The 1900 census lists a John Berry in West Hemlock, Montour, PA (born 1830). William Ulrich is also written on one of the stencils. The 1880 census lists a William Ulrich in Watsontown Boro, Northumberland (born 1794). It would appear that these stencils were used by a cabinetmaker in either the Danville, Montour County area, or Northumberland County area.
Condition: Many in very good condition; a few pieces in poor condition.
These stencils were probably used with bronze powders for decorating chairs, wardrobes, pianos, beds, cornices, chests, and many other small articles used in the home.
