EARLY SPANISH FOLK ART SANTA MARIA BASTIDOR SANTO
A charming early 19th century Spanish colonial Santa Maria santo. This striking santo is a fine example of the Santo de Bastidor, a type of santo that was made to be wigged and elegantly dressed. It features a carefully carved and polychrome painted wood and gessoed head, with inset glass eyes, and hands with long tapering fingers on articulated arms, jointed at the shoulders and elbow. The figure's lips are half open to reveal her teeth. The upper body is attached to the original rough cone of barrel staves to form the cage base. These types of figures were then provided a wig, symbols, and a robe that hides all but the carved features. The santo is in fine condition except for age cracks. The hands are not original to this piece.
Measures 56 1/2 inches in height. Base measures 12 x 17 1/2 inches.
