RETABLO: EL NINO DE ATOCHA, THE CHRIST CHILD OF ATOCHA
This retablo painted on tin depicts The Christ Child of Atocha, one of the most widely revered images in Mexican art. In Atocha, Spain during the 10th century when the Moors held Christians captive, only children were allowed to bring food and water to the prisoners. A child came dressed in pilgrim's garb and after feeding all prisoners his basket and gourd remained full. It was viewed as a visitation from Christ and for this reason the Niño is patron of prisoners and petitioned to gain their freedom. He also protects travelers and rescues people in danger. Condition: Some paint loss. Circa 1850 to 1900.
Measures 10 x 13 1/4 inches.
