ELLSWORTH FRAKTUR CENTRE COUNTY PENNSYLVANIA 1863 BOWER
An ink and watercolor fraktur birth certificate by J.S. (James Sanford) Ellsworth, Four-Corners Flowers Artist (Union and Centre County, Pennsylvania, mid-19th century), for Andrew Foster Bower born December 20, 1863, son of Adam (son of Henry Bower) and his wife, Susan (the daughter of Michael Musser) in Haines Township, Centre County, Pennsylvania. Baptized by Rev. D. (Daniel) Sell. Certificate designed, lettered, and decorated by Ellsworth with central heart script, two six-point stars and corner flowers.
Genealogy: This is the Bower family related to the immigrant Jacob (Bauer) Bower from Germany (son of John and Catherine) who came to Haines Township in 1791 from Hanover Township, York County. He married Christena Nase, daughter of Philip, and died in 1821 or 1822, aged 63. Their children were Jacob, Michael, Adam, Henry, Elizabeth, Catherine, and Valentine. Henry Bower had a family of ten children--Michael, who died in 1881; Jacob, William, George, Cornelius, Adam, Christena, Eve, Mary, and Julia. [pg. 300 Linn's History of Centre and Clinton Counties]
Adam and Susanna (Susan) are buried at Wolf Chapel and cemetery, established in 1789 on seven acres of land donated by Jacob Stover. This land also contained a school and an outpost during the Revolution. There are many unmarked graves for both Seneca Indians and whites here.
