"It has been the object of the Compilers of this volume of English Civil Costume to pourtray the most striking characteristic of each reign, marking, as distinctly as they have been able, the violent and gradual changes that have taken place from the Conquest to their own times, in the shapes and shades of English Dress. In all cases they have thought proper to refer to their authorities, and the references will, it is deemed, be of additional use in directing attention to less observable but still not uncharacteristic differences."
